Cave Creek Unified School District recently announced that Horseshoe Trails Elementary School was named a 2020 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education.

Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos recognized 367 schools as National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2020 based on a school’s academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups, according to a press release.

“Congratulations to this year’s National Blue Ribbon School awardees,” said Secretary DeVos in a prepared statement.

“It’s a privilege to recognize the extraordinary work you do to meet students’ needs and prepare them for successful careers and meaningful lives.”

The National Blue Ribbon Schools award affirms the work of educators, families and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools, the release said of the recognition in its 38th year.

The program has bestowed almost 10,000 awards to more than 9,000 schools, with some schools winning multiple awards. Schools are eligible for nomination after five years.

“It is with great honor and excitement to let you know that our school has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as an Exemplary High Performing National Blue Ribbon School,” said Horseshoe Trails Principal Aaron Pettinato, in a prepared statement.

The school is one of five from Arizona to be recognized as a recipient, she added.

“The entire CCUSD Family could not be prouder of Horseshoe Trails Elementary School. Being recognized as an Exemplary High Performing National Blue Ribbon School is a prestigious honor and validates the dedication and superior skill of the entire staff.

This is a school community that ensures every student not only achieves to their potential, but also loves learning. Congratulations HTES,” said CCUSD Superintendent Debbi Burdick in a prepared statement.

The 2020 National Blue Ribbon Schools Awards Ceremony will be held virtually Nov. 12 and 13, according to the release.
