A dream 36 years in the making is about to come true in Goodyear.

At 10 a.m. Friday, April 23, city of Goodyear and Globe Corp. officials will break ground on Phase I of Goodyear Civic Square at GSQ, a project first conceived in 1984 that now coming to fruition as a result of the public-private partnership the two formed in 2019.

In-person attendance at the ceremony will be limited due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the city invites residents to watch as it streams live on the city’s Facebook page, @goodyearazgov, as well as on its website, goodyearaz.gov/civicsquare.

Globe Corp. owns 47 acres at McDowell Road and 150th Drive where Civic Square will be built, and is donating some of the land to Goodyear for the project, city officials said in a release.

Soon, residents will see a four-story, 125,000-square-foot City Hall building featuring a two-story, 20,000-square-foot public library, council chambers and city offices rising at the site, along with Globe’s three-story, 100,000-square-foot office building and a parking structure that can accommodate up to 1,100 vehicles.

Also part of the project is Civic Square Park, a 2-acre greenspace that will serve as a gathering spot for community events, food trucks, parades, fairs, concerts and more, including an iconic Goodyear sign for selfies.

Civic Square also will feature:

  • Upscale Class A office space to attract high-quality jobs;
  • Space for new restaurants, retail and entertainment; and
  • An art sculpture capturing the story of Goodyear.
