CORE Institute donates $10K to St. Mary’s Food Bank

Posted

The CORE Institute orthopedic practice recently donated $10,000 to St. Mary’s Food Bank to help with increased demand from the COVID-19 pandemic.

St. Mary’s Food Bank, which helps feed hungry families throughout Phoenix, will be able to provide an additional 70,000 meals to Arizona families in need with the donation from The CORE Institute, according to a press release.

“The CORE Institute focuses on more than just musculoskeletal health, we also focus on the health of our communities. So, it was important to support our local community partner, St. Mary’s Food Bank, during this crisis that has left so many people unable to put food on their tables,” said Dr. Mark Campbell, Arizona market president at The CORE Institute, in a prepared statement.

“Food insecurity,” according to a press release, is a problem faced by nearly 2 million Arizonans every year.

The number has drastically increased during the past year with COVID-19, quarantine protocols, and the loss of jobs across the state. Nearly 30% of Arizonans are living on wages that barely cover housing and other basic necessities.

With little money to spare for food, the release said many people across Arizona often skip meals and have no other choice than to purchase the cheapest, sometimes expired, groceries to feed themselves and their families.

St. Mary’s Food Bank served 20% to 25% more families in 2020, feeding 2,000 families weekly compared with 500 in 2019, noted the release.

“With an incredible number of families turning to St. Mary’s for help during this pandemic, we are distributing more food than at any time in our 53-year history,” Food Bank President and CEO Tom Kertis said in a prepared statement.

“We can only achieve our goal of helping all in need with the assistance of partners like The CORE Institute, and we thank them for their generous donation.”

St. Mary’s Food Bank is described as a community-based organization. Individual donors, corporate donors such as The CORE Institute, and private grants help feed hungry individuals and families in the area.

Serving nine of Arizona’s 15 counties, the release added St. Mary’s Food Bank is committed to volunteerism, building community relationships, and improving the quality of life for Arizonans in need.
