Cohen eyes equality for all in legal system

Name: Steven A. Cohen
Where I live: Our family has lived in the Town of Paradise Valley for more than 25 years near Chaparral High School. We have enjoyed hearing the marching band practice as well as the cheering crowd during Firebird football season. Both of our daughters attended Cochise, Cocopah and Chaparral. Two of our grandchildren attend Cherokee.
Where I attended school: In 1975 I completed my undergraduate degree in Political Science at Arizona State University and then attended Arizona State University College of Law. It is with great pride that we continue to support The Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law.
How long I’ve worked in the legal profession: I have practiced law for over 40 years and I am an active participant in our community, serving as a Judge in the Town of Paradise Valley since 2001, and am a member of several professional organizations. My law practice, Cohen Law, is located in Scottsdale. I am certified by the State Bar of Arizona as a specialist in Wrongful Death and Personal Injury Litigation.
Why I decided to pursue a career in the legal profession: My goal in pursuing a career in law was, and continues to be, to ensure that the American legal system operates in a fair manner for everyone. Serving as a volunteer judge alongside my colleagues is an honor and a privilege. We are fortunate to work with a knowledgeable and caring staff. My judicial career followed nearly eight years as a member of the Town of Paradise Valley’s Planning Commission.
Why I volunteer for the local municipal court: Concern for, and giving back to our local community is, I believe, the responsibility of every member of our society.
What is the most rewarding part of being a judge: I appreciate the ability to assist those who come before the Court, as litigants, to understand that our legal system is designed to be fair and impartial. In my experience, good people can make errors of judgment.
What I like to do in my spare time? Spend time with my family, travel and attend Valley cultural and sporting events.
Who was the biggest influence in your life? Why? My wife, Shari, has been the biggest influence in my life. Together, sharing common interests and values, we have navigated our world for over 40 years.
What advice would you give to someone interested in pursuing a legal profession? Pursue a career in law for the right reasons --- it may take you further than you ever dreamed was possible. It does, however, take considerable time, energy and commitment.
