Chaparral football player tests positive for COVID-19

A member of the Chaparral High School varsity football team has tested positive for COVID-19, Scottsdale Unified School District, prompting two weeks of cancelled games, officials said Sept. 30.
The player, who last attended football practice on Friday, Sept. 25, is now in isolation, per Scottsdale Unified School District’s COVID-19 Response Plan and the guidance of the Maricopa County Department of Public Health, a press release stated.
Members of Chaparral’s varsity and junior varsity football teams, their coaches and staff have been notified by the school they may have been exposed to the ill player, instructed to quarantine for 14 days and asked to monitor their health closely for COVID-like symptoms.
Chaparral is working in with MCDPH to conduct contact tracing to identify any others who may have been exposed to the virus through close contact with the student athlete, the press release stated.
“Close contact” is defined by public health officials as having been within 6 feet for longer than 10 minutes.
As a result, Chaparral’s JV game on Oct. 1 and varsity game on Oct. 2 against Saguaro High School are canceled, as are those Chaparral teams’ games against Sandra Day O’Connor High School on Oct. 8 and Oct. 9.
Activities and games of the Chaparral freshman football team are still scheduled, as no close contact between the teams has taken place, the press release stated.
Chaparral is not currently open for in-person learning, but is scheduled to reopen, pending health metrics, on Monday, Oct. 12, following the district’s annual fall break the week of Oct. 5–9.
“We feel so badly for the affected students that they will not be able to partake in their regular activities during this isolation period,” said Dr. Scott A. Menzel, SUSD superintendent.
“However, this does serve as a sharp reminder that in order to keep our schools and extracurricular activities open, we must have the strong cooperation from all families, students and staff to monitor their health, recognize and report symptoms, and stay at home when sick or when a family member is sick.”
