Carlisle Construction Materials donates supplies to Cosanti restoration

Posted

The Cosanti Foundation announced that it is the recent recipient of a major gift of energy-efficient roofing materials from Carlisle Construction Materials.

According to a press release, this donation is being immediately utilized as a part of The Cosanti Foundation’s ongoing project to restore Cosanti, one of its two signature Arizona properties located at 6433 E. Doubletree Ranch Rd. The other is Arcosanti, near Mayer.

“On behalf of everyone at The Cosanti Foundation, I’m incredibly appreciative of Carlisle Construction Materials’ time, construction expertise and material contributions to help with our restoration of Cosanti, an Arizona cultural treasure,” Liz Martin-Malikian, CEO and executive director of The Cosanti Foundation, stated in the release. “This effort would not be possible without their generous support to help us beautify our property and create educational spaces to share with The School of Architecture.”

Cosanti is a major tourist attraction and is listed on the Arizona Register of Historic Places. For nearly 60 years, it was the home and studios of artist, architect and author Paolo Soleri, who along with his family and students, built nearly all of the unique, earth-cast structures at Cosanti between 1955 and 1976.

Today, Cosanti is also the headquarters of Cosanti Originals, The Cosanti Foundation’s world-famous bronze and ceramic bell-making business visited by tens of thousands of people every year. CCM’s donation will help The Cosanti Foundation to complete two crucial components of the site’s restoration: Pink House and Cat Cast, the release stated.

“The generous donation by CCM not only enables us to complete the restoration of two iconic structures at Cosanti but will also allow us to share the historic architecture of the property with visitors for years to come,” Mark Johnson, general manager and director of retail for Cosanti Originals, stated. “We offer them our sincere thanks and gratitude.”

As the original ranch house on the property, Pink House predates the Soleris’ purchase of the land in 1955. A private residence until Soleri’s passing in 2013, Pink House has never before been open to the public, despite being the first structure most visitors encounter.

Pictured above, re-roofing on the property's Pink House is currently underway.

After renovation, Pink House will re-emerge as the new offices for Cosanti-based staff of The Cosanti Foundation and Cosanti Originals and as an ADA-accessible welcome center for daily visitors.

CCM’s contribution of energy-efficient roofing material plays a critical role in enabling The Cosanti Foundation to provide a climate-controlled environment while preserving the historic character of the building, whose original exterior walls and vintage hearth will remain entirely intact, the press release explained.

Re-roofing is underway as of this donation, with Pink House expected to open to the public in early 2023.

“On behalf of Carlisle, we are pleased to participate in this incredible renovation,” stated Chris Koch, chairman, president and CEO of Carlisle Companies. “We have long been admirers of The Cosanti Foundation’s art and work in the community and impressed by the architecture in the greater Phoenix area and beyond created by graduates of The School of Architecture. We are especially proud that Carlisle’s energy-efficient roofing materials will help The Cosanti Foundation reduce their greenhouse gas footprint and lower their operating costs.”

Cat Cast (named for the small Caterpillar tractor used to help shape the earthen mound on which the concrete structure was cast) will also be receiving new roofing thanks to CCM’s donation.

Used by The Cosanti Foundation for decades as a dormitory for students in their signature multiweek workshop programs (whose participants provided the labor that built both Cosanti and Arcosanti), Cat Cast will soon be utilized as a learning and collaboration space for both The Cosanti Foundation and The School of Architecture.

Formerly known as The Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture at Taliesin, TSOA is now in residence at Arcosanti and expected to begin using portions of Cosanti as a campus in the upcoming academic year.

In the near future, The Cosanti Foundation will be further recognizing Carlisle Construction Materials by officially placing a plaque in their honor outside of Pink House. With CCM’s contribution as inspiration, the Fund will help complete the remaining restoration projects at Cosanti, with anticipating funding reaching more than half a million dollars. Public and private interests are invited to contribute to this fund.

Cosanti is open to the public daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information about The Cosanti Foundation, visit www.arcosanti.org and cosanti.com.
