Benefit check given to ALS patient

Posted

Gilbert residents Maya and Maceo Carter recently received a check for $8,000 from Paint For A Cure, a nonprofit that lends support to those affected by ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

Maceo Carter was diagnosed with ALS in 2016. He has slow-progressing ALS and is currently in a wheelchair part-time. He and his wife, Maya, are currently living in a two-story home, and Maceo is confined to one room because he cannot navigate the stairs.

Maya homeschools her children, Xavier, Malcom and Mason. The funds they received will help with living expenses or help the family purchase an accessible van.

Paint For A Cure was founded by Phoenix resident Eric Weinbrenner. In, 2019, the day before Thanksgiving, Eric was diagnosed with ALS, and after receiving this overwhelming news, he turned to painting as a way to cope.

Painting became a creative outlet to calm his nerves and mind, allowing him to shift his focus from his diagnosis to his art.
