Kavanagh: It’s time to reform drug pricing rules in the U.S.

Posted

As we get closer to election season, we are going to hear a lot more about the issues that seemingly always come up around this time of year.

Specifically, drug prices are going to be a major talking point.

While it may feel like no progress is getting done on the issue, it appears that the leaders of both parties are starting to recognize that a major driver of high drug prices are in fact the pharmacy benefit managers. These middlemen have played a large role in raising the prices of prescription medication through shady tactics like not passing drug manufacturer coupons through to the consumer.

Luckily, Senate leaders on both sides of the aisle have introduced legislation that calls for the investigation of these pharmacy benefit managers or have been outspoken about the needed reform. Arizona leaders like Sens. Kyrsten Sinema and Mark Kelly are going to be key to get action on this issue, and now is the time to do it.
