Canyon View High School evacuated following bomb threat

Few details reported as Buckeye PD and Sheriff's office continue investigation

This article was updated at 6:23 p.m. to reflect that classes will resume on Friday, Sept. 17 following an announcement on Canyon View's Twitter page.

Canyon View High School students in Waddell were evacuated Thursday morning after the school received a bomb threat.

A statement from Principal Phillip Nowlin was vague about the type of threat the school received, but stated the Buckeye Police Department and Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office had evaluated the situation and determined the campus should be evacuated immediately.

“The campus is now an active investigation scene and all students and staff have been dismissed,” the statement read, adding  Canyon View is working with law enforcement to determine if a student was involved in making the threat.

There were about 960 students enrolled at Canyon View High School in the 2019-20 school year, according to the Arizona Department of Education.

Students who walk and drive to school were dismissed about 11:45 a.m., and parents were asked to pick up their children via Bethany Home Road around 12 p.m.  Students who ride the bus were dismissed from school about 12:30 p.m. and lunch was provided to the waiting students.

Girls volleyball, JV football, swim and dive, and boys golf were canceled, but will be rescheduled, according to announcements from the school.

Canyon View High School tweeted around 6 p.m. on Sept. 16 that classes will resume Friday, Sept. 17.
