West Valley Preps' Glendale/Peoria badminton season preview

The high school girls badminton season began Sept. 14 at schools across the state. West Valley Preps and the Glendale Independent and Peoria Independent asked local high school coaches about their teams. Here are their responses:

Centennial Coyotes

Coach: Taylor Nowlin (first year)
2019 Record: 5-8 (Did not reach playoffs)
Region: Division II Peoria
Who are your top returning players? Sarah Wolff and Kavya Walia are my top returning players. Both very smart players.
Who are some of the newcomers that may have an impact this year? Tawnie Mozervis is just a freshman but is very athletic, i think she will do great things for us this year.
What are the primary goals for this year’s team? Our primary goal is to make it to state. My individual goals for my girls is to get better every  match we play.

Ironwood Eagles

Coach: Brett Stafford (8th year)
2019 Record: 13-1 (Division II semifinals)

Region: Division II Peoria
Who are your top returning players? I have four seniors returning who have played on varsity since their sophomore year, Toni DeMarco, Kelly Grady, Savannah Hendrix and Xandra Rhodes.
Who are some of the newcomers that may have an impact this year? I have three juniors that are doing very well and should positively impact our team, Diana Batrez Ramirez, Juliana Traylor-Rowen and Evelyn McHenry.
What is your team’s best attribute entering this season? Our best attribute this season is experience and desire.  This team has played together a long time and wants to win.
What are the primary goals for this year’s team? Our primary goal is always to win state as a team we also want to continue to win our section as a team.  Our single and doubles players also want to win or place very high in the state in those categories.
I am very excited about this year and the ability of the team.  We are very excited and happy to have a season this year with all the uncertainty that has been associate with sports.  We are also glad to see that our district and the AIA see the importance of athletics for high school students.

Mountain Ridge Mountain Lions

Coach: Tim Rosinbum (10th year)
2019 Record: 11-3 (Division I semifinals)
Region: Division I Desert Valley
Who are your top returning players? Ali Roskelley, Samantha Rawson, Jenna Dickson, Ali Pedersen, Cassidy Korman and Crystal Bellew. We are a deep team, but not very experienced on varsity. We are looking forward to the season.

Who are some of the newcomers that may have an impact this year? Stella Wesson, a hard hitting player, is looking really strong. Maranda Rogers and Teagan Pereira are sophomores that look really good this year.
What is your team’s best attribute entering this season? We are deep and thrilled to play this year.
What are the primary goals for this year’s team? Have fun and enjoy this new normal. We are grateful for the opportunity to play! I hope to finish with at least eight wins.

Sunrise Mountain Mustangs

Coach: Margaret Jacobs (4th year)
2019 Record: 13-1 (Division II semifinals)
Region: Division II Peoria
Who are your top returning players? Logan Rhodes, Karrah Abbott, Emma Stinson, Alli Clark, Ashley Robinson, Taylor Tillman and Hattie Hearnen
Who are some of the newcomers that may have an impact this year? Aliya Garrett, a junior who is playing varsity after just starting badminton. An excellent athlete who plays goalie on high level soccer team.
What is your team’s best attribute entering this season? Players are very happy that the season is taking place and working together in encouraging yet competitive manner
What are the primary goals for this year’s team? Primary team goal is to make it to team state competition. Individual goal is to support each player to reach her playing potential along with all of them growing together as teammates.
