Crews preparing to resurface freeway’s pavement

Stretches of Interstate 17 between Deer Valley and Jomax Road in north Phoenix will be closed at times this weekend (Sept. 11-13) for pavement improvement work, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Drivers should plan for heavy traffic and delays while considering alternate routes while the following I-17 closures are in place:

  • Southbound I-17 closed between Jomax and Deer Valley roads from 9 p.m. Friday to 9 p.m. Saturday (Sept. 12). Traffic will detour east on Jomax Road, south on 19th Avenue, and west on Deer Valley Road. Consider alternate routes to avoid heavy traffic and delays.
  • Northbound I-17 closed between Deer Valley and Jomax roads from 9 p.m. Saturday to 9 p.m. Sunday (Sept. 13). Traffic will detour east on Deer Valley Road, north on 19th Avenue, and west on Jomax Road. Consider alternate routes to avoid heavy traffic and delays.

Drivers also should consider scheduling their I-17 travel earlier in the morning or later at night while the closures are in place.

Crews will remove the top layer of the older I-17 pavement to prepare for resurfacing the freeway as part of the project to reconstruct the interchanges at Pinnacle Peak and Happy Valley roads. The $50 million project, which also is widening I-17 between the two interchanges, is scheduled for completion this fall.
