Suspects in custody after shooting at Glendale police vehicle

Posted

No injuries were reported after a suspect shot at a detective's unmarked patrol vehicle, according to Glendale police.

According to a release, officers located a stolen vehicle in the area of 67th and Glendale avenues around 2 p.m. April 9.  Detectives then followed the vehicle to the area of El Mirage and Camelback roads.

Police said a detective was behind the SUV when the vehicle went onto a round-a-bout and U-turned to pass the detective's unmarked vehicle.

Police said the passenger, who was sitting on the rolled down doorframe of the SUV's window, fired several shots towards the detective’s vehicle, striking it at least once.

The detective continued surveillance and directed marked patrol units to make a high-risk stop. The suspect vehicle stopped on its own near El Mirage and Indian School roads, where police arrested the suspects without further incident.

Police identified the drive of the stolen vehicle as Johnny Carlos Guzman Jr., 19, and the passenger/shooter as Juan Antonio Borquez II, 28. A semi-automatic handgun was recovered from inside the stolen vehicle.

Mr. Guzman told detectives he knew the vehicle was “probably” stolen and that he was being followed by who he thought were the police. Mr. Guzman indicated he would not have surrendered had the stolen vehicle not run out of gasoline.

Mr. Borquez allegedly admitted to shooting at the detective’s vehicle.

Police said Mr. Guzman had an outstanding felony warrant and was booked on charges of drive by shooting, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possession of weapon by prohibited possessor, possession of dangerous drugs, and unlawful flight from law enforcement.

Mr. Borquez was booked on four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, drive by shooting, possession of a weapon by a prohibited possessor, discharging a firearm within city limits, and criminal damage.

Glendale police said they are treating the incident as an officer-involved shooting since an officer was shot at. This would make it the 17th officer-involved shooting in Maricopa County in 2020.
