Glendale Planning Commission gave special permission for a Greulich’s Automotive auto repair shop in north Glendale. The property is zoned for commercial use but required a conditional use permit to allow for an auto repair shop, which the commission approved unanimously. The company still must have its design review approved by the commission.

The proposed auto shop, in the 51 Campana shopping center at the northwest corner of 51st Avenue and Bell Road, would be the Arizona company’s first location in Glendale. Greulich’s has 13 locations in the Valley and three in the West Valley.

The proposed Greulich’s will contain 10 service bays in a 5,510-square-foot, one-story, 20-foot-tall building. The property is 0.9 acres inside the 20.3-acre 51 Campana shopping center. The shop will have 28 parking spaces. Cars will be able to enter and exit from both Bell Road and an interior road through the shopping center. Benjamin Graff, a lawyer from the firm Quarles & Brady LLP representing Greulich’s at the planning meeting, said the site plan is to not make the service bays visible from Bell Road.

Addressing any concern about noise to the nearest homes, Mr. Graff pointed out that the shop would be 351 feet from the nearest home and that all the shop’s work will be done inside the service bays. The shop will not do any body repair or major engine overhaul. There is also a brick wall on the northern edge of the 51 Campana center, buffering it from the nearest homes to the north.

Mr. Graff said Greulich’s does not insist on any color scheme or style for its shops but is flexible on design.

“You’re not dealing with somebody that insists just on their specific design or whatever it may be because of a corporate issue. We do try to blend into the local architecture and materials to make sure we’re compatible,” he said.

Though Greulich’s has not yet gone through its design review period, it is planning a color scheme of eggplant purple, desert hue colors like shades of tan and brown, and gray steel service bay doors.

The proposed site for the shop is between the existing Krispy Kreme and Del Taco. Also in the 51 Campana site is a Burger King and a Dignity Health Emergency Room, which has yet to open. Also planned in the center are two additional drive-thru restaurants and a self-storage facility.

Greulich’s planned hours are 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Saturdays and closed on Sunday.

Another auto repair facility, Service First, is being considered as one of the tenants on a vacant eight-acre lot immediately to the southwest of the 51 Campana center, across Bell Road.
