A Glendale student was among 14 statewide winners awarded scholarships by the Luke Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America.
Gabriela Flores Diaz graduated from Independence High School, 6602 N. 75th Ave., where she was a member of the JROTC program. She is attending Arizona State University where she is majoring in nursing with a minor in military justice. She was the top ranked applicant selected by the Luke Chapter review committee, and will receive a scholarship of $4,000.
The Luke Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America is a West Valley-based organization of more than 200 retired and former military officers and their spouses, from the eight uniformed services. The Luke Chapter is dedicated to fostering goodwill and camaraderie among members, and also devotes effort and money to support veterans in need and active duty members and their families.
A major charitable effort of the Luke Chapter Scholarship Fund in 2021 was to award 14 scholarships, totaling $30,000, in support of higher education of eligible students. Four scholarships were awarded to outstanding high school seniors and 10 to college students, nine of which were previously awarded scholarships from the Luke Chapter. The scholarships ranged in size from $1,000 to $4,000. The winners were selected based on scholastic achievement, leadership, volunteer service, moral character and acceptance at an accredited college or university.
Business donors include Liberty Automotive Group, The Colonnade in Surprise, Barnett Administrative SVCS, and LRF Edward Robson. Chapter members and friends who made significant contributions include Michael Kramer, Alex and Inez White, Bonita Popejoy, Vern and Connie Clark, Anegla Elliott, Dennis DeFrain, Betty Shults, Bill and Eileen Fedor, Fred and Patricia Williams, Lou and Lois Tronzo, Marty and Barb Chambless, Jim Greenwald, Charles and Susan Kice, and Pam and Jerry Wojtas.
