Sierra Verde STEAM Academy, 7241 W. Rose Garden Lane, Glendale received a School Challenge grant to fund the student-run morning announcements program, and got a visit from some Arizona Diamondbacks as well.
J.J. Putz, former D-backs pitcher and Special Assistant to the President and CEO; John Woods, University of Phoenix Chief Academic Officer and Provost; and Diamondbacks mascot Baxter visited the campus March 4 for the check presentation.
The D-backs $100,000 School Challenge, presented by University of Phoenix, provides schools from around the state with grants up to $5,000 to fund projects ranging in need from school improvements to innovative educational programs. The program has provided more than 220 schools with grants for an overall monetary commitment of more than $1 million since the program launched in 2012. Sierra Verde STEAM Academy was among 22 winning schools this year selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation and University of Phoenix.
The Challenge provides an opportunity for all public, private and nonprofit charter schools, grades K-12 to apply for a grant to assist in one of four categories: educational programs: innovation and technology, nutrition and fitness and school/campus improvements. Each winning school will receive a check on the field at a 2020 D-backs game at Chase Field. The D-backs will donate more than 450 tickets for students, parents, teachers and staff from each school to attend the D-backs’ game in which their school will be honored.
