The Glendale City Council has approved an idea designed to keep tenants in their homes and protect property owners adversely affected by the COVID-19 crisis.
The Property Owner Preservation program allows landlords to apply for federally funded assistance on behalf of their tenants.
“Many renters, who have suffered job losses or wage cuts, may not fully understand the process for applying for renter assistance funds,” community services director Jean Moreno stated in a news release. “This plan allows both single-family and multi-family landlords to apply on behalf of residents, keeping tenants in place and protecting landlords from further losses.”
The program will cover payments up to six months with a maximum of no more than $2,000 per month, per unit, with preference points given to individual single-family rental owners with four units or fewer. Funds will be distributed through a lottery of approved applications and prioritized by preference points.
“Glendale is aware of how hard this pandemic has been on both landlords and tenants,” Mayor Jerry P. Weiers stated. “I am proud of how quickly staff thought outside the box to not only create an entirely new program but also get it up and running to help landlords protect their property while keeping tenants in their homes.”
Funding for the program is provided by The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. To apply for assistance, landlords must apply along with the required documentation between Sunday, Nov. 1 and Sunday, Nov. 15.
