PHOENIX (AP) — A Glendale police detective fatally shot a carjacking suspect who had knocked another detective to the ground during an encounter in Phoenix.

The incident happened Friday morning at a gas station near Interstate 17 and Camelback Road, the Glendale Police Department said.

The suspect was reaching behind his back while positioned over the detective on the ground when the second detective shot the suspect, police said.

According to a statement, a gun was found near the suspect and the encounter occurred as the detectives tried to arrest the suspect.

The statement said the suspect had been driving a vehicle that was taken recently in a carjacking armed robbery in Glendale.

The Glendale Police Department and Arizona Department of Public Safety jointly identified the suspect as Derick Manuel Bonilla, 39.

DPS is investigating the incident, police said.
