What: Virtual Q&A with Dr. Ron McCurdy
When: Noon-1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24
Glendale Community College will feature a multimedia presentation of the Langston Hughes Project, based on Mr. Hughes’ poem, “Ask Your Mama: 12 Moods for Jazz,” in celebration of Black History Month.
The poem is an homage in verse and music to the struggles for artistic and social freedom at home and abroad at the beginning of the 1960s, according to a news release from the Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD). Watch a live Q&A with Dr. Ron McCurdy, professor of music in the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California and past president of the International Association for Jazz Education, in a virtual event from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24.
Dr. McCurdy is the director of the National Grammy Vocal Jazz Ensemble and combo, and also serves as Director of the Walt Disney All-American College Band in Anaheim, California. He has performed with a host of legendary jazz artists, including Wynton Marsalis, Joe Williams, Rosemary Clooney, Terence Blanchard, Leslie Uggams, Arturo Sandoval, Diane Schuur, Ramsey Lewis, Mercer Ellington, Dr. Billy Taylor, Maynard Ferguson, Lionel Hampton and Dianne Reeves.
MCCCD is hosting virtual events across many of the Maricopa Community Colleges, exploring Black history and celebrating the culture, impacts and achievements of the Black community.
“The Maricopa Community Colleges are proud to celebrate Black history and culture with students, staff, faculty, and community members of all backgrounds,” MCCCD interim chancellor Dr. Steven R. Gonzales stated. “We look forward to a month-long series of events across many of our Colleges that will allow an opportunity for dialogue, discussion, and education.”
