Dien Nguyen, a student at Glendale Community College earned the prestigious Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship.

The competitive national transfer scholarship will provide selected students with up to $40,000 a year to complete their bachelor’s degrees.

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation announced that Mr. Nguyen of GCC is one of 72 high-achieving community college students, and the only student in Arizona, to be selected as a recipient of the prestigious Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship.

Glendale has two campuses: a main one at 6000 W. Olive Ave., and a North Campus at 5727 W. Happy Valley Road.

More than 1,300 students from 370 community colleges applied for the 2021 Cooke Foundation Scholarship. The Foundation evaluated each submission based on students’ academic ability and achievement, financial need, persistence and leadership.

“Congratulations to Dien for earning the Cooke Foundation Scholarship,” Glendale Community College president Terry Leyba Ruiz stated in a news release. “It is truly a testament to his hard work, leadership and diligence. All of us at GCC are so proud of his accomplishments and excited that his future is off to a bright start with this wonderful scholarship.”

Nearly half of the students pursuing college choose to attend two-year institutions, according to the Foundation. Research commissioned by the Foundation found that community college students who transfer to selective institutions have equal to or higher graduation rates as students who enrolled directly from high school or transferred from four-year institutions. Yet, at the nation’s top colleges, only 5 percent have transferred from a community college.

The Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship seeks to increase the number of community college students completing their education at top four-year institutions.
