GCC names director of new Diversity, Equity and Inclusion position

Posted

Dr. L. Alexander Patrick as the new director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) at Glendale Community College.

The appointment of Mr. Patrick to this newly formed position was announced by GCC president Teresa Leyba Ruiz to further the opportunity for the college community to become more equity-minded in its educational culture and to grow individually and institutionally, according to GCC.

The college has two campuses: a main campus at 6000 W. Olive Ave., and a north campus at 5727 W. Happy Valley Road.

The responsibilities of Dr. Patrick’s new role include: working to improve the success of all students, particularly finding equitable means that critically target those who have been historically marginalized and underserved; to critically examine institutional policies, practices, and structures through a lens that questions why inequities exist; to help clarify the understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion; to increase the capacity to move beyond mere conversations around DEI and integrate it into our institutional values and practices.

“My vision is simple, a shift to an equity-minded educational culture and environment.” he stated in a news release. “I do this work because I believe that change is not only inevitable, but necessary. I know we have the power to grow and evolve, not only as people, but as an institution to serve the needs of all. As an educator, I am motivated each day to continue this work because of my students and the huge impact we have in their lives as they work towards their dreams.”

Dr. Patrick is in his fifth year serving as residential faculty in the Social Sciences Department at GCC.

Originally from Louisiana, he attended Louisiana State University where he earned his undergraduate degree in anthropology. His master’s and doctorate are in Sociology and Women’s and Gender Studies, with specializations in Intersectionality, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Criminology, Race/Ethnicity, and qualitative research methodologies.

“We are extremely excited to add this very important leadership role and we are thrilled that Dr. Patrick is willing to apply his thoughtfulness, intelligence, passion and energy to this position,” GCC president Teresa Leyba Ruiz stated.
