Former Deer Valley Unified School District governing board member and president Ted Carpenter, who also became a member of the Arizona State House of Representatives, died Nov. 19.

Mr. Carpenter’s family confirmed the news. He was 68, and died after a long illness.

Mr. Carpenter served the teachers, students, parents and staff of the Deer Valley Unified School District as a board member and school board president for 14 years from 1993-2008.

He was also elected to the Arizona State House of Representatives where he served four consecutive terms in District 19 and District 6 from 1999-2006.

Mr. Carpenter was a firefighter for 25 years and most recently spent 15 years on the Valley Schools Management Group Board.

“Ted was not only a dedicated firefighter and public servant, he was a good friend who cared deeply about his community,” CEO of Valley Schools Tom Boone stated in a news release. “He was a great representative of his community and he made an indelible mark on Arizona. We will miss his commitment to education and his generous spirit.”

Mr. Carpenter is survived by his wife of 48 years, Jo Anne, his son Joshua, daughter Dayna and five grandchildren.
