The newest elementary school in Deer Valley Unified School District, set to open in fall 2022, has its inaugural principal.

The DVUSD governing board at its Dec. 14 meeting unanimously approved hiring longtime district employee Dr. JoAnn Schwarting as principal at the new school, tentatively called Elementary No. 32.

Schwarting is currently principal at Desert Mountain School, 35959 N. Seventh Ave., Desert Hills.

“I would take this opportunity to thank you for giving me the chance to build a caring and connected hub for this community,” she said to the board, moments after Tuesday night’s vote.

E#32 will be a K-6 elementary school, with the infrastructure in place for future expansion to a K-8 campus. The district broke ground on E#32 in the Stetson Valley development this past September at the school site at 5757 Inspiration Mountain Parkway, near 57th Avenue and Happy Valley Road.

Schwarting is a third generation Arizona resident and grew up in Lakeside where she graduated from Blue Ridge High School. After serving four years in the U,S, Navy, Schwarting earned a bachelor of arts degree in education from Arizona State University, a Master of Arts degree in educational administration and supervision from Northern Arizona University, and a doctorate in education leadership and innovation from Arizona State University.

She has served the Deer Valley Unified School District since 2005.
