League for MLB prospects to return in 2021

Camelback Ranch-Glendale will be silent this fall.

The Arizona Fall League on Tuesday tweeted news that had already made its way around baseball circles that there would not be a 2020 season.

“Due to these unprecedented times, the Arizona Fall League has been canceled for the 2020 season,” the Arizona Fall League tweeted Sept. 29. “We look forward to returning in 2021.”

According to Baseball America, MLB didn’t feel that the Fall League venues were safe from coronavirus for the large rosters plus coaches and staff.

The ballpark, at 10710 W. Camelback Road, hosts the Glendale Desert Dogs during the fall season. The Dogs are made up of prospects from the Chicago White Sox, Cincinnati Reds, Los Angeles Dodgers, Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals.

Following every season, each MLB organization sends seven top prospects to compete against each other in the Arizona Fall League. Michael Jordan famously played with the Scottsdale Scorpions in 1994.

There are six teams in the Arizona Fall League: the Desert Dogs, Scorpions, Mesa Solar Sox, Salt River Rafters, Peoria Javelinas and Surprise Saguaros. Teams are broken into two divisions, East and West.

The 2019 All-Star Game in Cleveland featured 43 Arizona Fall League alumni, according to the league. Nearly 60% of all AFL players make a Major League roster, with 321 All-Stars, 19 MVPs, six Cy Young Award winners, seven World Series MVPs, 99 Silver Sluggers, 88 Gold Glovers, and 30 Rookies of the Year.

Each August, Major League clubs hold a position draft to determine players who will go to Arizona. Most are Double-A and Triple-A  players.

A day or night AFL game features $9 tickets for adults and $7 for seniors (55+), and fans can sit anywhere they like. Kids 15 and under are free.
