Gilbert's Day of Service gains community popularity

Posted
Financially and physically limited Gilbert residents aged 65 and up will receive additional support on Saturday, June 18, during the town’s Day of Service.

Event organizer Sharon Kotsonas first started this quarterly service on July 4, 2019 with her family, and it has been growing since.

“The word has really gotten out,” she said. “The town of Gilbert has been great at promoting it. They were even able to add it to their town calendar.”

Volunteers visit the homes of the registered individuals in need of help and perform household tasks that they are unable to complete on their own.

“We wanna make sure that they have a safe environment to live in,” Kotsonas said. “We try to remove any hazards or help with things that they cannot reach.”

Previous tasks include painting, moving appliances and furniture, patching drywall, testing smoke detectors and removing outdoor debris.

“A storm may come their way, but they do not have the means to remove the debris,” Kotsonas said. “Some of the people that we are helping have been fined by the town or their HOA because of this.”

The previous Day of Service, which occurred on March 12, 2022, had around 20 participating volunteers. Yet, Kotsonas is expecting more than 35 this time around.

“We are hoping now that we have more volunteers, we can change it to a monthly frequency,” Kotsonas said.

She hopes to host a Day of Service monthly by 2023.

Volunteers will meet at OneSource Shipping and Printing, 1496 N. Higley Road, Ste. 102, Gilbert, at 7 a.m. They are encouraged to bring gloves, masks, tools and a step ladder, if possible.

Currently, 15 Gilbert residents are signed up to receive help, Kotsonas said. Volunteers will be split up into teams, and each team will be assigned one or two homes to serve.

“We want to help the elderly neighbors because those are our parents and grandparents,” Kotsonas said. “That is the focus we have.”

The event will be from 7-11 a.m. Interested volunteers can sign up on their website.
