Arizona tops 15,000 cases of coronavirus

Posted

Arizona has surpassed 15,000 cases of COVID-19, according to the state Department of Health Services.

As of Thursday morning, the AZDHS reports 15,315 cases and 763 deaths in the state, up 418 and 16 from Wednesday, respectively.

The Maricopa County Department of Public Health reports 7,733 cases and 347 deaths in Arizona’s most populous county.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. But for some — especially older adults and people with existing health problems — it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and death.

Arizona does not report recoveries yet but is displaying the number of cases discharged from the hospital. That amount is at 3,872 — or 25.3% of total cases as of Thursday morning.

According to AZDHS, 602 deaths in the state have been in people 65+. Two of the state's deaths are people under 20 years.

Free antibody testing for vets

The Nick Lowery Youth Foundation has partnered with Peak Health and Dr. Nancy Gaines Dillard’s Integrative Clinics to provide free, FDA authorized and Gov. Doug Ducey-approved COVID-19 antibody “finger-prick” tests to military veterans at Nancy Perry Productions’ special Car Show.

Testing will take place 5-8 p.m. Saturday, May 23 in the Mixteca Mexican Restaurant parking lot on the southwest corner of 67th Avenue and Bell Road in Glendale.

Veterans must provide their veteran service ID to participate. Tests will be made available to community members for $40 each.

MAG maps display unemployment claims by ZIP code

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on Arizona’s economy, especially when it comes to job losses, according to the Maricopa Association of Governments.

Now we know just where those job losses are occurring.

New maps created by MAG show there are no areas in the state that have escaped being hit by unemployment claims, according to a release. However, the Maricopa region had the most losses, experiencing about two-thirds of the state’s unemployment claims. Other areas with traditionally stable employment numbers also were affected.
