For the past six years Altrusa of the West Valley has honored students from Rio Salado College, 12535 W. Smokey Drive, Surprise, for achieving their GED (General Education Diploma).
Altrusa of the West Valley is a volunteer service organization whose purpose is to promote better communities through service by an international network of people with diverse backgrounds and experiences. The local chapter welcomes all potential members who live and/or work in the West Valley. The club was chartered in 1978 to serve all West Valley communities.
In recent years, the GED reception has taken place at the college and honored students with a monetary reward to acknowledge their accomplishment. Because of the pandemic, Altrusa this year was unable to host a reception, and instead personally met the students chosen by their teachers and the staff to be recognized.
Altrusa worked with Rio Salado staff and were given the names of 10 students who have worked hard to reach their goal. The club sent them a card of congratulations and enclosed their monetary award. Five students were from Surprise, three from El Mirage and two live in Peoria.
Friends of the Surprise Libraries, Inc., partners with Altrusa to provide the financial support for this event.
This literacy project supports the mission statement of Altrusa: to support the community with a focus on literacy and service.
