September staycations at The Wigwam to benefit educational foundation

Posted

Arizona and California residents who stay at The Wigwam in downtown Litchfield Park during September will help the resort honor teachers serving students across the Southwest Valley.

For every getaway booked at September’s resident rate, the resort will give $5 to the Litchfield Elementary School District Educational Foundation, said Katy Powers, Wigwam managing director and general manager.

Teachers are “local heroes who, now more than ever, deserve our heartfelt thanks and support,” she said via email.

The district serves students from preschool through eighth grade at 11 elementary and five middle schools in Avondale, Buckeye, Goodyear and Litchfield Park.

The foundation is a private, nonprofit organization that supports LESD teachers, staff and students. Each year, it presents PRIDE Awards to faculty and staff throughout the district. The Wigwam’s donation will go to support that recognition, Ms. Powers said.

Foundation President Kathryn Prusinski lauded The Wigwam for it contributions.

“The foundation for strong schools rests in the partnerships the district develops with businesses and parents alike. We are fortunate that our business partners value public education and more importantly, the teachers and staff that serve our students every day,” Ms. Prusinski said via email. “Now more than ever, it is so important to let our teachers and staff know how much we value them and The Wigwam’s commitment to this is so very much appreciated. I know I look forward to a getaway staycation this month to enjoy Wigwam’s incredible hospitality, knowing I’m supporting such a worthy cause.”

The Wigwam, 300 E. Wigwam Blvd. in downtown Litchfield Park, was built by Paul W. Litchfield in 1918 to accommodate Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. executives visiting the company’s 16,000-acre World War I cotton-growing operation.

Originally called Organization House, the facility was expanded over the years. In 1929, it was renamed The Wigwam Guest Ranch and opened to the public on Thanksgiving Day.

In 1986, Goodyear sold its properties in the area, including The Wigwam, to SunCor Development Co. Today, the 440-acre resort is owned by JDM Partners and continues to serve as a hub for many community events while drawing visitors from around the world.
