NextEra plans $600M solar plant in Buckeye

NextEra Energy Resources is building their next solar energy project in Buckeye.

The facility would be the largest for Juno Beach, Florida-based NextEra in the state. The 3,000 acre facility, the Sonoran Solar Project, is just east of State Route 85 near the Riggs Road alignment.

The Sonoran Solar Project is an innovative solar and energy storage project with a capacity of up to 260 megawatts of solar combined with 260 megawatts of battery energy storage.

The project is expected to bring a $600 million investment as well as 500 construction jobs during the 18-month build timeline. The plant will be run by 15 employees.

Buckeye also will get the benefit of $500,000 in annual taxes.

“The Sonoran Solar project is more than solar panels and batteries," said Buckeye Mayor Eric Orsborn. "It represents another significant capital investment in the city Buckeye, the West Valley and the state of Arizona. It’s another example of Buckeye’s commitment to sustainable and renewable energy production.”

This will be the third facility built in Arizona by NextEra Energy Resources. They operate solar projects in 27 states, include the Pinal Energy Storage and Pima Battery Energy Storage System. NextEra also has a 99-megawatt wind farm in Coconino County.

Construction is expected to begin in October of 2021.
