Two Litchfield Park residents were contenders in the fifth annual Bashas’ Supermarkets Donut Craze Flavor Contest.

Amy Bartlett’s Raspberry Lemon Delight, a vanilla cake donut with lemon, drizzled with raspberry icing, and Eric Bartlett’s Root Beer Float, a donut filled with vanilla cream, mixed with buttercream and topped with root beer icing, were nudged out in adult category by Angel Fuchs of Glendale, who won for her Strawberry Shortcake, a donut filled with strawberry glaze, topped with strawberry icing and dipped in a cookie crumb.

Youth category winner 10-year-old Makenzie L. of Surprise won for her submission, Sprinkle Explosion, a donut filled with buttercream and sprinkles, topped with white icing, swirled with drops of color and topped with sprinkles.

Both were named Bashas’ Donut Ambassador for 2020, and their donuts will be served in Bashas’ bakery cases through the end of June. In addition, the two will receive $500 in prizes including a Bashas’ gift card, family fun activities and baking/cooking gadgets, along with one dozen donuts every month for a year.

The runners-up in each age category will receive a $50 grocery gift card, with a $20 grocery gift card going to honorable mentions in each age category.

Bashas’ judges take the competition seriously, weighing creativity, flavor combination and individuality based on a 100-word description of each donut, including the proposed name, key ingredients and why the donut is the entrant’s sweet treat or guilty pleasure. Entries spanned two categories: youth ages 8-17 and adults 18 and older.

Bashas’ announced the winners on its Facebook page this week, prompting kudos from donut fans, as well as the bakers who will make them.

“I’m a doughnut fryer for Bashas’ ... can’t wait to make these!” Amber Merino gushed on the announcement post. Congratulations to the winners and all that entered.”
