Arizona tops 31,000 cases of coronavirus

Arizona has topped 31,000 cases of coronavirus after the latest update.

The Arizona Department of Health Services reports 31,264 cases and 1,127 deaths in the state, up 1,412 and 32 from Wednesday, respectively.

The Maricopa County Department of Public Health reports 16,025 cases and 511 deaths in Arizona’s most populous county.

The numbers of cases per 100,000 residents in the state is 430 as of Wednesday, using 2019 estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau. Maricopa County is below that at 357. Navajo and Apache counties have rates of 2,235 and 2,625 per 100,000 residents, respectively, the only ones above 2,000 in Arizona — Santa Cruz is next at 1,731.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. But for some — especially older adults and people with existing health problems — it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and death.

More testing sites available

CVS Health is helping America move forward by continuing to evolve and expand its approach to COVID-19 testing to meet the needs of consumers, the business community and populations disproportionately impacted by the virus.

As part of an ongoing commitment to Arizona by helping to slow the spread of the virus and to support communities as they begin to safely reopen, CVS Health is expanding its COVID-19 testing program with 14 additional test sites at select CVS Pharmacy drive-thru locations across the state.

The opening of additional test sites Friday, June 12 add to the 35 locations previously opened by CVS Health across Arizona, and are among more than 1,200 locations across 33 states and the District of Columbia.

These new sites will utilize self-swab tests and will help enable the company’s goal processing up to 1.5 million tests per month, subject to availability of supplies and lab capacity.

Self-swab tests will be available to individuals meeting Centers for Disease Control and Prevention criteria, in addition to state and age guidelines.

Patients must register in advance at CVS.com beginning Friday, June 12 to schedule an appointment.

There are no out-of-pocket costs for these tests for both insured and uninsured patients.

Patients will be required to stay in their cars and will be directed to the pharmacy drive-thru window or a location in the parking lot at a few stores, where they will be provided with a test kit and given instructions.

A CVS Pharmacy team member will observe the self-swab process to ensure it is done properly. Tests will be sent to an independent, third-party lab for processing and the results will be available in about three days.
