The Sonoran Desert Chorale sings of common and varied life journeys — and welcomes Andrew Maxfield, prize-winning American contemporary composer — to a concert in Mesa.

A “You Come, Too” performance will take place at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 30, at First United Methodist Church, 15 E. First Ave. in Mesa.

Advance single tickets are $18 for adults/$15 for seniors, students and groups of 10 or more; tickets at the door are $20 for adults and $18 for seniors/students. Tickets may be purchased at SonoranDesertChorale.org or by calling 480-305-4538.

The compositions of Maxfield have been performed throughout the U.S. and Europe. He is a recent winner of the King’s Singer’s New Music Prize (Jury Special Commendation).

The chorale will perform three pieces by Utah-based Maxfield — “Whatever Is Foreseen in Joy,” “The Door” and “A Gracious Sabbath Stood Here.” The composer will comment on these songs as well as share his musical vision with the audience.

The concert title is drawn from the poem by Robert Frost, The Pasture, which the chorale will sing as set by Z. Randall Stroope.

In Frost’s poem, the journey is short and fairly simple, but life journeys are often far more complex. Journeying together, meeting by chance or design, and deeper, spiritual journeys are all part of the human experience.

The chorale performs “O Whistle and I’ll Come To Ye,” “I’ll Ay Call In By Yon Town” and “My Love’s in Germany” — a trio of Scottish folk songs; Shaun Kirchner’s “I’ll Be On My Way,” Felix Mendelssohn’s “For God Commanded Angels to Watch Over You,” a traditional American folk hymn — “The Promised Land” and Aaron Copeland’s “Zion’s Walls,” and sings of finding the way home in Stephen Paulus’ “The Road Home” and Marta Keen’s “Homeward Bound.”

The chorale shares these stories of many journeys. Be inspired by them and by special guest Maxwell, who says, “Making beautiful things that people love and that reflect some light into the world makes me whole, happy, and sane — and hopefully leaves the world around me a little better.”
