Gold Canyon group offers pianist Sean Chen in a virtual concert Nov. 20

The Gold Canyon Arts Council, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, has postponed its previously announced 2020-21 Canyon Sounds Performance Season for one year. The only exception to that decision was to present Pianist Sean Chen’s scheduled performance in a virtual concert format especially designed for the Gold Canyon Arts Council members and other invited guests.
The online concert will be available free of charge for viewing at 7 p.m. Nov. 20 and will be available to view for six months. Gold Canyon Arts Council and Arizona Piano Institute members may access the concert by going to the arts council’s website at goldcanyonarts.org.
Mr. Chen was the first American to reach the finals of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition since 1997. He went on to win the Bronze Medal in 2014 and then became the 2015 recipient of the $100,000 Annenberg Fellowship. For a more complete bio, go to seanchenpiano.com. He has selected a dazzling one-hour program of music by Haydn, Schubert, Ravel and Beethoven.
In addition to the concert, Mr. Chen will present a virtual masterclass online at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19. GCAC member Steve Harris, who is also a board member of the Arizona Piano Institute, has worked with Dr. Jack Kukuk, GCAC artistic director, and Dr. Jessica Yam, API artistic director, to present three outstanding young pianists in a virtual masterclass with Sean.
The young virtuoso pianists selected to participate in the masterclass are Justin Kang, Daniel Kang and Yuna Kang — all members of the same very talented family. Interested viewers will access this masterclass by going to the GCAC website and following the instructions for the masterclass.
