Vice Mayor Chip Wilson wins Apache Junction mayor election

Posted

With fewer than 14,100 votes counted by the Pinal County Elections Department, Vice Mayor Chip Wilson has received 55.67% of the votes cast and Councilmember Robin Barker received 43.35% for Apache Junction mayor. Tallied votes were last posted at 11:29:56 Nov. 9.

Maricopa County Elections Department, with 175 votes cast, is showing the opposite — Mrs. Barker at 53% and Mr. Wilson at 47% — for results as of 9:10:16 p.m. Nov. 12.

The two received the most votes for mayor out of five candidates during the Aug. 4 primary ballot. Since no candidate received the required majority vote as determined by state law, the top two candidates advanced to the Nov. 3 general election.

Mr. Wilson, 72, retired in 2018 from the Boeing Co. where he worked for 17 years as an electronic test equipment certification and repair technician; and retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1990 after 22 years of service as an electronic test equipment technician. He was elected and has been on the Apache Junction City Council since 2007, last serving as vice mayor. He also served as president of the Superstition Horsemen’s Association 1999-2007 and is the current president of the Arizona Horse Council from 2006 to present.

Mrs. Barker, 77, is a founding partner and owner of the AJ News and a retired teacher. Previous public office, boards and commissions include: Genesis board member, 2014-20; Pinal Partnership board member, 2007-20; MAG Regional board member, 1993-97 and 2007-20; MAG Economic Development Committee member, 2018-20; vice chair MAG Domestic Violence Council, 2010-20; AJ Planning and Zoning commissioner, 2005-07; and AJ city council member 1989-97, 2007-20 including four years as AJ vice mayor.

A mayor — and the three City Council members elected Aug. 4 — will be seated during the first meeting in January 2021.

Per city code, the salary for the position of mayor is $1,000 per month. For vice mayor it is $900 per month and for council member it is $800 per month.
