Anderson: Working on comprehensive plan to reopen schools July 21

Posted

Dear Apache Junction Unified School District parents and families,

I want to thank you all for your continued support and patience as we continue to work towards a comprehensive plan for reopening our schools on July 21.

We appreciate the time you continue to give to answer our surveys and stay up-to-date with our communications.

Today, we sent out a survey to parents asking which model they would choose specifically for each child in their house. This data will allow us to continue to review options and plan accordingly to support the families of Apache Junction Unified School District.

It is important that we give our families options as we believe the retention of students during this time is vitally important to our community. The three learning options that we are currently exploring are:

  • Full-time, students on campus in person with precautions in place.
  • Hybrid option, for elementary and secondary students allowing the choice to learn both on campus part-time and do the rest of their learning at home each week.
  • Full-time, students learning online at home.

This week on Tuesday, June 23 at 6 p.m., there will be a governing board meeting. You may watch the governing board meeting on YouTube.

During this meeting recommendations for a plan to return to school will be shared with the governing board. The recommendations have come from weeks of research, review of guidance and work that the Return to School Task Force has done during the month of June.

You will be able to view the documents being shared by following this link which will take you to the board agenda. This first presentation is a discussion with the board and on July 7 the board will vote on their decision with a final plan.

Our Return to School Task Force and District leaders continue to follow activities at a local, state and federal level to ensure that our plan will reflect the recommendations and guidance from the Governor’s Office, the Department of Education, the CDC and local agencies.

My commitment to the families of Apache Junction Unified School District includes the continued learning and growth of our students while providing the necessary steps to ensure a safe and healthy environment to open our schools.

This is a challenging time for all of us. I appreciate the support and patience that our community has provided. I ask for your continued support as we strive to provide the best options for a timely and safe return to school.

Editor's note: Dr. Krista Anderson is superintendent of the Apache Junction Unified School District. The above was texted to parents and staff the night of June 21.
